Kid friendly restaurants

12/01/2017

Wining and dining was a big part of our life, so we didn’t wanna change that when Mille was born. Going out to nice restaurants was gonna stay in our weekly routine. Little did we know…

I was shocked to see the looks of some people when we entered a nice place with Mille when he was still a tiny baby.
Some people looked at us like we’re ignorant parents, while it was perfectly do-able at that age. He slept or drank a bottle, that’s it!!
We didn’t let it get to us, but I can imagine that some people would be discouraged.

Now Mille is at a stage in life that it’s impossible to go to a restaurant in the evening. He’s too tired and restless by diner time.
So the solution is going out for lunch for now.
The more kid friendly to better, because you need some extra stuff with a little kiddo.
I went to Copenhagen and there it’s perfectly normal to take your  LITTLE kids out to diner or lunch. Every hipster place has children chairs and some toys or somethings to keep them busy.
In Belgium it’s a very different story. Such a shame…
Mille is in the ‘testing my voice out’ fase, so yelling is a way to express that he’s enjoying himself.
Instead provoking and going to a ‘social not accepted kids place’, nowadays I’m always looking for a great place to eat, that is kid friendly and practical.

Here’s my checklist to be kid friendly
kid chairs?
play corner? (not necessary, but practical and no need to carry extra toys with you)
changing place? (not necessary, but practical if you do not want to change your kid on the seat of the toilet 😉
inside noise? The more noise the better
Which kind of public? I’m sorry, I don’t wanna be judgemental, but I write what I’ve experience, when the room is full of quiet coffee drinking old ladies, they will probably not be happy with a kid that makes noise at the other table, and yes you will get the looks, but I’m sorry I can’t tape my kids mouth to shut it up. Instead I play along with Mille (I have a rebellion character)
parking? this one is just easy if you have to bring lot’s of extra toys to keep them busy!

My favourite so far in Ghent is Amelie+moi
This is a bistro especially made for kids. They do great brunches on Sunday.
The interior is modern, the staff is friendly even if you make a mess, they have baby food and drinks, but most importantly you feel at home and at ease.
Our search goes on, my goal is to find the perfect place to eat with Mille in every city where we like to go.
In a meanwhile the messier we leave the place, the bigger the tip. Y’all know what I’m talking about!

Pack like a pro

10/10/2015

To travel stress free with a baby, it is mandatory to plan ahead. Is it easy? Not exactly, but with enough planning and the right attitude, it’s not as hard as you might think. Just read our post about our first plane we took with our little munchkin here.

A good checklist is the first thing you need before you start your travel adventure with your baby. To avoid a ‘Oh-my-god-I-forgot’ scenario, you need a good checklist that works for you and your family. In our hectic life everyone has a to-do list, it is from time to time nice to have a not-to-do list, but that’s when you are at your holiday destination.

You can take a ready made checklist or make your own, either way make your checklist 3 weeks in advance, so you can order your missing items online or buy them in your local store.I tempt to overpack if I travel, but believe me a baby does not need 5 pair of shoes and 3 different outfits/day. Check your hotel what they provide, baby bath, travel bed, baby seat, etc. There are some things you might want to buy ad your destination, like washing powder, diapers, baby formula, wipes, etc. So that’s your first to-do list 😉

Here’s a fun ready made checklist, you can find plenty of them on the internet.

made my own and added some more children, just for you guys who have more kiddo’s. You can view and copy-paste the entire list here. The things I need in my hand luggage, are marked in yellow. To have a detail view into our hand luggage diaper bag check here.

One last tip before you start packing, is to relax, if you’re not traveling to a third world country, you can buy the things you forgot. So chill and enjoy being with your family!

What’s in our flying diaper bag?

10/09/2015

This is about what works for us when we travel by plane. We always find ourselves with a cramped diaper bag even when we are not taking a plane. Our mission was clear for travelling we needed a huge bag that won’t contain just the baby essentials, but also our basic personal stuff. Most Belgian airlines do not allow extra hand luggage when travelling with babies.

After a long search and unfortunately some bad buys, we found a perfect big bag for that: the Elodie Details StrollerShopper in Graphic Grace. It’s huge and has a wide shoulder strap, so if you stuff it, it doesn’t hurt your shoulder, not even on your bear skin. It is washable, that was a key point for us, because travelling means getting your bag dirty!

If you cramp up your bag, you need a system. Working with different pouches, every pouch has a different print so I could easily find the right one in no time. The toys were tossed loose inside, for some extra surprise effect on Mille when I grabbed something from the bottom of the bag.

A must have for us on holiday is Mille’s dream sheep, we call her Eva Mouton, she makes white noise, plays classical music and gives light. Perfect to snooze the trip away!

Create a checklist, so you don’t forget the essentials and the extra’s! Read our post about making a checklist like a pro!

OFFICIAL PAPER POUCH

Don’t forget a pouch with official papers like a kidsID, child booklet, medical card, etc.

TOYS

detailtoys

Like we already said toys are loose in the bag, this worked better for us. 1 Sophie la Girafe, great for chewing and she looks so pretty and is from Paris, trop chic! 2 Rings and rattles are always good to have around, Mille is happy to grab them. 3 Mille loves these kind of musical books, this Rhyme and discovery book is from Vtech4 We love the Done by Deer brand, they make beautiful toys who are very stylish. Mille loves to put these Zoopreme Safari friend in his mouth 🙂 5 Also a winner is a soft book, this one from Fisher Price has a rattle attached, get’s his attention every time.

CHANGING POUCH

6 Pretty Pouch by Cabbages & Roses, they have great house wear. 7 Pretty essential wipes for that little booty, make sure you bring your regular brand and don’t try out new brand on holiday, travel size is enough 8 Changing cushion, ours is black and beautiful! This one from Lässig is washable and foldable and folds like a A5 book with Velcro. 9 For us a must have for on the go, Cytelium spray, this diaper rash cream, comes in a spray, so no need to dirty your fingers, just shake the bottle and spray. You will thank me when your in that small airplane cabin changing your little one! 10 Same as the wipes, diapers are pretty essential when you travel and take enough for the journey and your arrival. The rest you can buy the next day in a local supermarket. Always fun to have foreign language diapers and wipes, makes changing a dirty one so much more fun! 😉 Don’t forget some plastic bags. Carry a variety of sizes for storing soiled diapers, clothes, and blankets.

FEEDING POUCH

Bring more than double than you need baby formula, your baby has to drink at take off and landing. 11 This milk powder dispenser from Bojungle is lean, AOK pretty and can hold up to 4 feedings. 12 We took 5 feeding bottles with us, filled with Evian water. Mille gets cramps from other brands, so we didn’t want to gamble. You can easily get through customs if the water is in a feeding bottle and meant for your baby. They will poor out some of the liquid to see if it is actually water. 13 Feeding tote bag  from Black Balloon, our family favourite brand (du-uh), this came in handy in the plane, we just had to put some essentials in this one along with the feeding bottles, so we didn’t had to get up every 5 seconds. Also on holiday, this was a good alternative to the big bag for small walks. 14 Bring lot’s of bibs, you never know how your baby reacts in the air. Muslin cloths is also a good thing to bring, Mille likes to sleep hugging one (so cute), but this also comes in handy for burping accidents.

TOILETRY POUCH

15 Don’t forget your baby’s sunglasses, they are essential! Most of the time you need them right away after landing, so keep them near. I searched for a long time for a baby wayfarer model, but I don’t think they make them for small babies. If anyone knows a brand who does, please leave a comment. 16 Don’t forget some gum or mints for take off or landing. 17 Hand sanitizer is an alternative to hand washing with soap and water. Babies touch everything, so keep your hands and his/her hands germ free. 18 Essential kleenex for travelling with or without a baby. 19 Bring extra pacifiers. We didn’t loose one, but in case we would we had 4 extra! (Mille is very picky on that) 20 Lip balm for you and your baby, We are an organic lovers family, so Dr. organic is a perfect brand for us. This balm has a SPF 15 and smells like coconut, perfect to set the holiday mood. 21 Remember that song, ‘always wear sunscreen’, handy to have right before arrival, put it on you and your baby. 22 An essential for us, Digemel sirop, we took it with us in our hand luggage in a travel container. We dip his pacifier in it and silence is with us! 😉 23 pocket size face and hand wipes. These Biolane organic wipes are skin friendly and toxic free.

EXTRA CLOTHES POUCH

24 This large fabric pouch from 3 suisses is perfect for spare clothes on the go. Bring extra rompers and extra outfits, don’t forget to put on an lighter outfit before landing, so your baby is ready to rumble the tropical temperature! You don’t want to smell like baby puke the whole plane ride.Don’t forget those large poncho’s or scarfs, they come in handy during flight and on holiday. Last but not least choose your baby’s sun hat carefully. The ones with a back flap gives your baby more protection from sun and wind.  We went for the Flap hat from the Flap Happy brand this hat has an 50 UPF+
