Hiking with a 2 year old

We are most definitely beach people, but we love the mountains for skiing in the winter, but there are more things to do especially in Les 2 Alpes in Summer than you would imagine. Summer luge, trampoline camp, air castle park, summer ski (of course) etc. Mille is almost 2,5 years old, so a little hiking trip was worth a try.

We started the first one with a short hike (30 min)on a low height (1800m), just to see if he liked it, and didn’t get height sick.

Babies or toddlers can get height sick, keep this rule in mind and you’ll be fine: 1-year-old not more than 1000m, 2 years around 2000m and so on. Also, the cable lift has to be a slow one, going up too fast isn’t good for their little ears.

Our first try-out we went up the mountain with our stroller up to 1800m, everything went smooth and I noticed that maybe should hire a baby carrier for longer and higher hikes. Even dough Mille always hated to sit in a baby carrier, I thought now would be different, so on our second hike around 2400 meters after 5 minutes of walking, he was pretty content to sit in it. It was an easy walk for 30 minutes. He didn’t sit in it all the time, he loves to walk freely my independent little dude. After that we had a great lunch with amazing views ‘Au Coeur du Diable‘ and Mille with a little help of mister iPad sat still for a least 2 hours!

3 days later we tried the bigger work, hiking at 2800 meters and a hike down to 2400 meters normally it takes 1,5 hours, but with a 2-year-old it took us about 2 – 2,5 hours. We didn’t take the baby carrier this time and we’re surprised that the hike went quite a bit upwards than we expected. That resulted in Mille that wanted to be carried in mummy’s arms! 0_0

It was sure a whole different ball game than the hike we did before, we laughed at each other saying ‘if the grandmothers would see us now…’

But at the end, we were very proud to have done it and super proud of our little man! We even did a little yoga and jodeling on the way 🙂

What I have learned on our hiking is that you really need:

  • baby carrier even if your toddler doesn’t like it, he will sit in it and you’ll be thankful
  • extra clothing, cause in the mountain weather changes fast!
  • good shoes with grip
  • sunglasses and hat
  • sunscreen
  • extra liquids for you and your child
  • extra snacks also for you and your little one
  • make it fun, sing or play games with rocks or find some cool sticks
  • tell and learn him or her what you see
  • make extra stops or pause
  • if your toddler doesn’t wear a diaper during the day let him pee on rocks! 😀
  • be careful

The baby carrier you can easily rent, check before you go at the station’s tourist info.
