Cheap home activity for toddler 18 months

20/11/2016

I’m always looking for new, cheap ways to entertain Mille (he’s 19months already…OMG, time flies!).

fullsizerender-copy fullsizerender-2-copy

He get’s bored very easily, so new diversions are welcome.

Mille likes straws and boxes, so I thought I would try something out with the both of them! 😉

I had a nice shoebox with a hole in it and showed him to put the straws into the hole in the box. OMG bulls eye! 30 min of alone play for him 😀

img_2276-copy fullsizerender-6-copy

After he get’s bored of putting the straws in, he’s carrying the box through the whole house.

He even uses as an obstacle laying on it, standing on it…creative with a box, I love it!

So get your shoeboxes and straws out!

You can decorate the box if you like, but I don’t bother, because it get’s rough!

I’m sorry about the quality of the pictures, on Sunday morning we chill in pj. 😀

Perfect trip to the beach

17/08/2016

I admit I’m guilty of being a planner and like to be prepared before I get into something, especially with the little mister. So yes, I love tips and tricks for a more confortable holiday or trip.

Here’s some of my tested and approved ones

PACK:

Sun lotion (please smear your child at home before dressing, so you don’t forget any body part!)

Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 14.26.06

Water bottle spray

Talcum-powder (This is magic guys! Truly amazing stuff at the beach. If your baby is full of sand, put some powder on and gone is the sand, without scratching that little gentle skin!)

Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 14.12.52

Wet wipes (always bring wet wipes to anywhere, from now on they are your best friend for any trip you’ll be doing)

Regular diaper bag and swim diapers if you have any

Zip lock bags (these are handy for putting your keys, phone or wallet, so the sand doesn’t get in, also a zip bag for a few pacifiers

4 beach toys is enough

Beach tent for adults, you can bring the toddler version if you’re planning to stay a few days. Mille is 15 months and a half a day is exhausting for him and for us 😉 The beach tent is really handy for the shade of course, but it’s a good place to put all of your stuff out of the sun.

Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 14.35.45

Picnic blanket with pickets so the whole things stays in place.

And the usual extra clothing (pack some long sleeves, it can be colder especially at the Nord Sea.)

Regular diapers and swim diapers

Hat with side flaps is very handy to protect your child against the wind and sun! Flaphappy has some nice ones or George Hats is also a cool brand.

Sunglasses, if your child keeps them on! 😉

Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 15.02.11

We went for a day trip to the beach in the Nord of France. We love peace and quiet and the beach to our selves 😉

Really fun day and made memories for life!

Mille’s must have toys at age 4 – 6 months

17/01/2016

This is entirely our choice of toys. We’re not sponsored by anything of this, just Mille who loves to play with this stuff at the age between 4 and 6 months old. The pictures in this blog post with Mille in it, are family pictures and not taking especially for this blog.

Let me situate his skills at the time between 4 and six months. Mille can not sit up right yet. He can only sit upright with help of cushions or on our lab. He loves to sit in his Bumbo and Babybjörn sitter. Mille has the mesh fabric one, because he’s alway hot.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 17.15.30

In our blog post ‘What’s in our flying diaper bag’, you can see many of his favorite toys of the period between 4 & 6 months.

Let me start by saying, we have a very picky taste when it comes to our home. We would like more monochrome toys, but we’ve noticed that some of the colorful things with sounds and light do not come in a monochrome version. Too bad!

His favorite toy got to be an activity book from Vtech

livre enchanté

We have it in French, because Mille is partly raised in French. (Mum speaks French to him, and dad talks in Dutch). You can find these light and sound books in different brands and in any kind of language. We do like Vtech because it’s made of sturdy material and it has really nice songs in it. You can also adjust the volume of the sound from small speaker to large.

Rattles are hot too, especially the one with sparkles in it. This one is a vintage Fisher-price one that used to belong to my little brother aka Mille’s godfather. It is easy for Mille to take in his little hands and he is fascinated by the sparkles and red water in it.

.

Woody the worm is a good wooden toy for this age. It is easy to grab and Mille loves to put it in his mouth. He can bent to worm in all sort of shapes. Thanks Auntie Hilde for this great gift! 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 16.34.06filt

Household gear like a wooden spoon, wooden bottle opener or especially a whisk. His tiny little fingers like to grab the wired end of the whisk and he loves to bang on things with it. Or even a dish brush. Little containers or small bottles with pasta or rice in it. He loves to shake them and throw them on the ground.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 16.30.04filt

Soft fluffy blocks or balls wake his interest and he starts to like cardboard books.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 16.27.58filt

We love the brand Done by Deer, for us it’s a design baby brand. He still plays on mats lying down, so a good toy is a activity Gym by Done by deer and is the prettiest one on the market.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 18.14.02

Also the Mobile is pretty and fun for Mille to watch.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 18.14.15

When traveling we use the Zoopreme Pram toy to clip on his maxi-cosi or buggy.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 18.27.26filt

And also the Tiny Love travel mobile is a must have for Mille. This last one is not the prettiest one but works like a charm.

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 15.55.11

Also in the ‘not so pretty category, but works perfectly’ is the Tiny Love take-along arch. You can screw it on by hand anywhere you like. Thanks to our Osteopath for the tip! (wouldn’t buy on my own 😉

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 16.24.44filt copy

Top tip:

– leave the tags on the toys, babies love to grab them (only the baby save tags of course!)

– don’t buy too much toys, you’ll receive a lot from family and friends.

Happy play time with your little one!

birth gift wish list

27/12/2015

We didn’t have a baby shower when I was pregnant; this tradition is not very big in Belgium and I didn’t really feel like it.

It is more custom to make a Gift Wish List for the birth of your child.

Little did we know about getting a GWL let along about baby stuff 😉 , so we did some research on what we needed.

Our baby room is monochrome and we do not like different bright colors everywhere. It was hard to find a store who had the stuff we needed in our color scheme (black, white or maybe grey), we finally picked a store that was quite central for our family and friends and had stuff that was ‘–isch’ to our taste.

Here’s a few tips, keep them in the back of your mind if you’re going to have a GWL somewhere. This is what worked for us, everyone has his or her own habits so do not obsess about our list.

Screen Shot 2015-12-27 at 17.23.36

  • Start early with your research and choosing a shop or online shop for your wish list. Most shops require to register 6 months before your due date.
  • Make a list of baby essentials you need by category.

Baby on the go: stroller, baby carrier, umbrella, rain cover, baby bag, stroller bag for baby, etc…

Baby in the car: car seat, isofix, baby bag for car seat, summer cover, blanket, ear protectors, UV sleep/play tent, UV wetsuit, sunhat, etc.

Baby protection: baby phone or videophone, door or stair fence, etc.

Baby sleeps: crib, bed or bedside crib, baby changing table, room deco, matrass, sheets, nightlight, storage modules, travel bed (we use the UV-tent works perfect), sleeping bag, baby box, baby box matrass, baby box blanket, etc.Screen Shot 2015-12-27 at 17.35.23

Baby care: bath, bathrobe or bath cape, bad thermometer, changing matrass and cover, soft hair brush, fever thermometer, nappy bin and refill bags, manicure set, nose cleaner, potty, tooth care, washcloths, tetra cloths, baby care set (lotion, wash lotion, shampoo, diaper crème,…)

Baby feeding: feeding spoons, teething ring, food containers, travel footd containers, powder milk travel container, feeding chair, bottle heater, pacifier, blanket, bibs, snack bags, sterilizer, steamer mixer, bumbo and bumbo tablet, baby bottles (buy big ones), bottle cleaning brush

Screen Shot 2015-12-27 at 17.36.48

Baby plays: bath toys, crib hanger, cuddle cloth or doudou, push chair or rocking chair, walker, baby mobile, musical pull toy, baby bouncer or relax, do not put toys on it, you will automatically get toys as a gift) , play carpet, etc.

Baby clothes: It is better that you buy the essentials and not put them on your wish list. You can put some cute sunglasses, swimwear, footwear or accessories on it. Read more about baby clothes essential in our other post on the blog here.

  • Ask around friends and family what baby stuff they have that you can have or borrow. Pick out what you like or what you can (with permission) customize to your taste.
  • Pick a shop for your baby gift wish list that match your needs or taste.
  • Check the small letters on the contract. Some of the shops have a buying policy for all textiles products.
  • Ask the shop what you get in return for putting your list in their hands. Most list go from 2500€ up to 5000€. So this is a win-win for both parties. Get at least 10% of the amount of the sold items of your list in gift voucher.
  • Check your list from time to time to adjust.
  • Put the link to your wish list on your birth card, so people can easily find it.
  • Buy the most essential things before your baby gets home: bed, sheets, changing table, products, nappy bin, changing matrass, pacifier, bottles, sterilizer, bottle warmer

Happy searching and enjoy these first precious moments with your baby and new little family!

What’s in our flying diaper bag?

10/09/2015

This is about what works for us when we travel by plane. We always find ourselves with a cramped diaper bag even when we are not taking a plane. Our mission was clear for travelling we needed a huge bag that won’t contain just the baby essentials, but also our basic personal stuff. Most Belgian airlines do not allow extra hand luggage when travelling with babies.

Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 17.49.37

After a long search and unfortunately some bad buys, we found a perfect big bag for that: the Elodie Details StrollerShopper in Graphic Grace. It’s huge and has a wide shoulder strap, so if you stuff it, it doesn’t hurt your shoulder, not even on your bear skin. It is washable, that was a key point for us, because travelling means getting your bag dirty!

If you cramp up your bag, you need a system. Working with different pouches, every pouch has a different print so I could easily find the right one in no time. The toys were tossed loose inside, for some extra surprise effect on Mille when I grabbed something from the bottom of the bag.

IMG_1438

A must have for us on holiday is Mille’s dream sheep, we call her Eva Mouton, she makes white noise, plays classical music and gives light. Perfect to snooze the trip away!

Create a checklist, so you don’t forget the essentials and the extra’s! Read our post about making a checklist like a pro!

OFFICIAL PAPER POUCH

Don’t forget a pouch with official papers like a kidsID, child booklet, medical card, etc.

TOYS

detailtoys

Like we already said toys are loose in the bag, this worked better for us. 1 Sophie la Girafe, great for chewing and she looks so pretty and is from Paris, trop chic! 2 Rings and rattles are always good to have around, Mille is happy to grab them. 3 Mille loves these kind of musical books, this Rhyme and discovery book is from Vtech4 We love the Done by Deer brand, they make beautiful toys who are very stylish. Mille loves to put these Zoopreme Safari friend in his mouth 🙂 5 Also a winner is a soft book, this one from Fisher Price has a rattle attached, get’s his attention every time.

CHANGING POUCH

6 Pretty Pouch by Cabbages & Roses, they have great house wear. 7 Pretty essential wipes for that little booty, make sure you bring your regular brand and don’t try out new brand on holiday, travel size is enough 8 Changing cushion, ours is black and beautiful! This one from Lässig is washable and foldable and folds like a A5 book with Velcro. 9 For us a must have for on the go, Cytelium spray, this diaper rash cream, comes in a spray, so no need to dirty your fingers, just shake the bottle and spray. You will thank me when your in that small airplane cabin changing your little one! 10 Same as the wipes, diapers are pretty essential when you travel and take enough for the journey and your arrival. The rest you can buy the next day in a local supermarket. Always fun to have foreign language diapers and wipes, makes changing a dirty one so much more fun! 😉 Don’t forget some plastic bags. Carry a variety of sizes for storing soiled diapers, clothes, and blankets.

FEEDING POUCH

Bring more than double than you need baby formula, your baby has to drink at take off and landing. 11 This milk powder dispenser from Bojungle is lean, AOK pretty and can hold up to 4 feedings. 12 We took 5 feeding bottles with us, filled with Evian water. Mille gets cramps from other brands, so we didn’t want to gamble. You can easily get through customs if the water is in a feeding bottle and meant for your baby. They will poor out some of the liquid to see if it is actually water. 13 Feeding tote bag  from Black Balloon, our family favourite brand (du-uh), this came in handy in the plane, we just had to put some essentials in this one along with the feeding bottles, so we didn’t had to get up every 5 seconds. Also on holiday, this was a good alternative to the big bag for small walks. 14 Bring lot’s of bibs, you never know how your baby reacts in the air. Muslin cloths is also a good thing to bring, Mille likes to sleep hugging one (so cute), but this also comes in handy for burping accidents.

detailtoilet

TOILETRY POUCH

15 Don’t forget your baby’s sunglasses, they are essential! Most of the time you need them right away after landing, so keep them near. I searched for a long time for a baby wayfarer model, but I don’t think they make them for small babies. If anyone knows a brand who does, please leave a comment. 16 Don’t forget some gum or mints for take off or landing. 17 Hand sanitizer is an alternative to hand washing with soap and water. Babies touch everything, so keep your hands and his/her hands germ free. 18 Essential kleenex for travelling with or without a baby. 19 Bring extra pacifiers. We didn’t loose one, but in case we would we had 4 extra! (Mille is very picky on that) 20 Lip balm for you and your baby, We are an organic lovers family, so Dr. organic is a perfect brand for us. This balm has a SPF 15 and smells like coconut, perfect to set the holiday mood. 21 Remember that song, ‘always wear sunscreen’, handy to have right before arrival, put it on you and your baby. 22 An essential for us, Digemel sirop, we took it with us in our hand luggage in a travel container. We dip his pacifier in it and silence is with us! 😉 23 pocket size face and hand wipes. These Biolane organic wipes are skin friendly and toxic free.

EXTRA CLOTHES POUCH

24 This large fabric pouch from 3 suisses is perfect for spare clothes on the go. Bring extra rompers and extra outfits, don’t forget to put on an lighter outfit before landing, so your baby is ready to rumble the tropical temperature! You don’t want to smell like baby puke the whole plane ride.Don’t forget those large poncho’s or scarfs, they come in handy during flight and on holiday. Last but not least choose your baby’s sun hat carefully. The ones with a back flap gives your baby more protection from sun and wind.  We went for the Flap hat from the Flap Happy brand this hat has an 50 UPF+
