Hiking with a 2 year old

24/08/2017

We are most definitely beach people, but we love the mountains for skiing in the winter, but there are more things to do especially in Les 2 Alpes in Summer than you would imagine. Summer luge, trampoline camp, air castle park, summer ski (of course) etc. Mille is almost 2,5 years old, so a little hiking trip was worth a try.

We started the first one with a short hike (30 min)on a low height (1800m), just to see if he liked it, and didn’t get height sick.

Babies or toddlers can get height sick, keep this rule in mind and you’ll be fine: 1-year-old not more than 1000m, 2 years around 2000m and so on. Also, the cable lift has to be a slow one, going up too fast isn’t good for their little ears.

Our first try-out we went up the mountain with our stroller up to 1800m, everything went smooth and I noticed that maybe should hire a baby carrier for longer and higher hikes. Even dough Mille always hated to sit in a baby carrier, I thought now would be different, so on our second hike around 2400 meters after 5 minutes of walking, he was pretty content to sit in it. It was an easy walk for 30 minutes. He didn’t sit in it all the time, he loves to walk freely my independent little dude. After that we had a great lunch with amazing views ‘Au Coeur du Diable‘ and Mille with a little help of mister iPad sat still for a least 2 hours!

3 days later we tried the bigger work, hiking at 2800 meters and a hike down to 2400 meters normally it takes 1,5 hours, but with a 2-year-old it took us about 2 – 2,5 hours. We didn’t take the baby carrier this time and we’re surprised that the hike went quite a bit upwards than we expected. That resulted in Mille that wanted to be carried in mummy’s arms! 0_0

It was sure a whole different ball game than the hike we did before, we laughed at each other saying ‘if the grandmothers would see us now…’

But at the end, we were very proud to have done it and super proud of our little man! We even did a little yoga and jodeling on the way 🙂

What I have learned on our hiking is that you really need:

  • baby carrier even if your toddler doesn’t like it, he will sit in it and you’ll be thankful
  • extra clothing, cause in the mountain weather changes fast!
  • good shoes with grip
  • sunglasses and hat
  • sunscreen
  • extra liquids for you and your child
  • extra snacks also for you and your little one
  • make it fun, sing or play games with rocks or find some cool sticks
  • tell and learn him or her what you see
  • make extra stops or pause
  • if your toddler doesn’t wear a diaper during the day let him pee on rocks! 😀
  • be careful

The baby carrier you can easily rent, check before you go at the station’s tourist info.

I shopped very cute flexible reusable bottles at Hema

Don’t forget to breathe the healthy air in!

Messy organic fun for babies from 8 months till…

26/05/2016

It’s sometimes challenging to come up with some fun activities to keep your baby entertained.

Organic slime we call it. Mix flour and water in a bowl until you get the consistency of slime 🙂 Put on some clothes which may be dirty & let the slime fun begin!

This is a rather messy one, but oooh so fun for your baby from 8 months till…

slimefun2

We play it outside in the yard, but if you want you can play it inside in a high chair with a mat underneath the chair. Don’t worry if it your little one wants to taste it. It’s organic and after one try, they know it’s not that yummy to eat.

It is so worth the mess, look at that happy, funny face! <3

Let your little one explore with all his or her senses…

That little black thing in the right corner is our dog licking the splashes that got out of the bowl 😀

Perfect first trip to the mountains

17/05/2016

First of all let me tell you that the Belgian childcare agency ‘Kind & Gezin’ told me that it is no ok, to go to the mountains with an baby younger than a year. This because of the height. They say 1000 meter from 1 year. But we figured that babies are also born there in the mountains so…what’s the fuzz?!IMG_6957

This was a car trip for us, with a stop in between, so the ride wouldn’t be too long and boring. So start your trip when your baby has to nap. We took off our route trip at 8 o’clock, so Mille could nap from 8.30 till lunch time. Nap again after a small lunch break till late afternoon. Fruit snack and stop our first part of the route trip when he was awake again. Perfect!

Packing smart is crucial:

1 bag for in the car: food (extra portions just incase), nappies, changing clothes and toys

1 bag to stay overnight in the hotel: food, nappies, pj & blankey, toiletry and comfy clothes for the second ride to our destination.

1 bag for the mountains: sunglasses, gloves (2 pairs), winter beanie, stockings (yes even if it’s a boy, put some stockings on, normal socks can fall down and leave some bear skin, you don’t want that in the snow!), waterproof snow suit with feet and gloves included, a sled, some bodies with sleeves, some chill pants and sweaters and of course the usual toiletry, nappies (just for one day, buy the rest in a store there), food, pj & blankey.

The ski resort is at 1600 meters and we didn’t take Mille higher than the station. He had a blast in the sled and in the snow! Also being 24/7 with us was a treat for him. Although we put him 2 mornings in ski day care so we could snowboard for a few hours together.

Perfect holidays and we can’t wait to go back!

Mille’s must have toys at age 4 – 6 months

17/01/2016

This is entirely our choice of toys. We’re not sponsored by anything of this, just Mille who loves to play with this stuff at the age between 4 and 6 months old. The pictures in this blog post with Mille in it, are family pictures and not taking especially for this blog.

Let me situate his skills at the time between 4 and six months. Mille can not sit up right yet. He can only sit upright with help of cushions or on our lab. He loves to sit in his Bumbo and Babybjörn sitter. Mille has the mesh fabric one, because he’s alway hot.

In our blog post ‘What’s in our flying diaper bag’, you can see many of his favorite toys of the period between 4 & 6 months.

Let me start by saying, we have a very picky taste when it comes to our home. We would like more monochrome toys, but we’ve noticed that some of the colorful things with sounds and light do not come in a monochrome version. Too bad!

His favorite toy got to be an activity book from Vtech

livre enchanté

We have it in French, because Mille is partly raised in French. (Mum speaks French to him, and dad talks in Dutch). You can find these light and sound books in different brands and in any kind of language. We do like Vtech because it’s made of sturdy material and it has really nice songs in it. You can also adjust the volume of the sound from small speaker to large.

Rattles are hot too, especially the one with sparkles in it. This one is a vintage Fisher-price one that used to belong to my little brother aka Mille’s godfather. It is easy for Mille to take in his little hands and he is fascinated by the sparkles and red water in it.

.

Woody the worm is a good wooden toy for this age. It is easy to grab and Mille loves to put it in his mouth. He can bent to worm in all sort of shapes. Thanks Auntie Hilde for this great gift! 🙂

Household gear like a wooden spoon, wooden bottle opener or especially a whisk. His tiny little fingers like to grab the wired end of the whisk and he loves to bang on things with it. Or even a dish brush. Little containers or small bottles with pasta or rice in it. He loves to shake them and throw them on the ground.

Soft fluffy blocks or balls wake his interest and he starts to like cardboard books.

We love the brand Done by Deer, for us it’s a design baby brand. He still plays on mats lying down, so a good toy is a activity Gym by Done by deer and is the prettiest one on the market.

Also the Mobile is pretty and fun for Mille to watch.

When traveling we use the Zoopreme Pram toy to clip on his maxi-cosi or buggy.

And also the Tiny Love travel mobile is a must have for Mille. This last one is not the prettiest one but works like a charm.

Also in the ‘not so pretty category, but works perfectly’ is the Tiny Love take-along arch. You can screw it on by hand anywhere you like. Thanks to our Osteopath for the tip! (wouldn’t buy on my own 😉

Top tip:

– leave the tags on the toys, babies love to grab them (only the baby save tags of course!)

– don’t buy too much toys, you’ll receive a lot from family and friends.

Happy play time with your little one!
